How much does notarization cost?
Short answer
States cap the fee for the notarial act itself — often between a few dollars and around fifteen dollars per signature. Mobile notaries may also charge a separate, agreed travel fee.
Full explanation
Two charges are involved and they are legally different. The notarial fee is set by state law and applies per act or per signature. A travel or convenience fee compensates a mobile notary for coming to you and is generally negotiated in advance. A reputable notary tells you both numbers before the appointment.
Common mistake to avoid
Be cautious of any notary who will not state the fee in advance, or who charges the state fee "per page" rather than per notarial act.
